Name Change
As part of Suharto's assimilation policy targeting ethnic Chinese Indonesians, the government strongly advocated that ethnic Chinese Indonesians change their names to Indonesian sounding names. In 1967 Tan Goan-Po adopted the name Paul Mawira, honoring one of his indigenous Sangirese ancestors.
